The integration marks a shift in how the chatbot interacts with local services. While users can initiate reservations through the chat window, the system retains a clear boundary: any modifications or cancellations to a booked table must be handled exclusively through the native Yelp mobile application. This development builds upon a previous collaboration established in July, which granted the AI access to Yelp’s repository of reviews, ratings, and business imagery to refine its local recommendations.
OpenAI is not alone in pursuing this utility. Competitors have already moved to consolidate similar booking features into their own AI assistants. Both Google’s Gemini and Microsoft Copilot currently provide reservation capabilities through OpenTable. Like the new Yelp integration, these platforms often require users to exit the chat environment to manage the lifecycle of a reservation, highlighting a recurring limitation in current AI-driven service booking tools.
