Family Offices Pivot Toward Clean Energy Amid AI Power Demands

Despite market volatility and a sharp mid-summer correction, ultra-wealthy family offices maintained a steady pace in July with 57 direct investments. While artificial intelligence remains a dominant focus for private capital, clean energy and sustainability firms captured over 15% of total dealmaking activity, signaling a strategic shift in investor priorities.

The month’s most significant transaction involved a $10 billion fundraising round for Blue Origin, bolstered by $2 billion from Jeff Bezos’ family office, Bezos Expeditions. This firm currently leads the year in activity, having recently expanded its portfolio with five artificial intelligence startups. Yet, the broader landscape suggests that the energy sector is undergoing a resurgence driven by the massive power requirements of AI infrastructure and the geopolitical instability surrounding the Iran war.

Antora Energy, a developer of thermal batteries, secured a $550 million Series C round featuring backing from venture billionaire John Doerr. His private firm, Foris Ventures, continues to prioritize long-term infrastructure, including investments in Panthalassa, Pacific Fusion, and Rondo Energy. This renewed interest marks a notable reversal for the sustainability sector, which saw U.S. funds record $3 billion in inflows during the second quarter of 2026, effectively breaking a three-year streak of net outflows. According to Morningstar data, the convergence of shifting energy geopolitics and industrial demand has transformed green technology from a niche ESG interest into a core economic imperative.
