Shares of IMAX surged more than 8% on Thursday as the company reaffirmed its projection to hit $1.4 billion in annual global box office. Market analysts had previously voiced concerns following the delay of Netflix’s Narnia adaptation, fearing a potential shortfall in the company's guidance. However, The Odyssey generated $52 million during its opening weekend, outperforming the debut of Nolan’s 2023 hit Oppenheimer by 47%.
CEO Rich Gelfond noted that the film’s momentum shows no signs of fatigue, with Tuesday’s $10.6 million haul marking the highest single-day performance in the company's history. Looking ahead, the pipeline includes major titles such as Spider-Man: Brand New Day, a new entry in the Resident Evil franchise, and Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Three. This robust slate is supported by an aggressive expansion strategy, with 38 new systems installed in the second quarter alone—the highest count for that period in a decade. With 421 contracts currently in the backlog and a target of up to 175 new installations by year-end, IMAX is positioning its infrastructure to capitalize on the sustained appetite for premium cinematic experiences.
