Pending regulatory clearance, the venture is slated to begin operations in the first half of 2027. Ford retains a 66% controlling stake, while Geely holds the remaining 34%. Throughout the transition, the Valencia facility will maintain production of the Ford Kuga, ensuring continuity during the factory’s shift toward battery-powered models.
This move follows months of negotiations as Ford seeks to counter the rapid global expansion of Chinese rivals. CEO Jim Farley has previously praised the efficiency of Chinese manufacturers, framing partnerships as a necessary step to bolster global operations. The collaboration deepens a relationship dating back to 2010, when Ford sold Volvo Cars to the Chinese conglomerate. The deal arrives against a tightening geopolitical backdrop, surfacing just one day after a U.S. Senate committee advanced legislation aimed at restricting Chinese automakers from the American market.
