Ford quarterly sales slide as supply chain and EV demand falter

A 10.3% drop in second-quarter U.S. vehicle sales has hit Ford Motor, driven by a sharp 40.7% decline in electric vehicle interest and lingering production bottlenecks. The automaker moved 549,200 units through June, trailing the 612,095 vehicles sold during the same period last year as logistical hurdles stalled its core truck business.

The slump in F-Series deliveries, which fell 11%, stems from a recovery phase following aluminum supply shortages caused by two fires at a key supplier late last year. While the company is currently ramping up production to meet commercial demand, the impact of these disruptions left a significant footprint on the quarterly ledger. Ford executives maintain that customer appetite for the flagship trucks remains robust and anticipate a full supply recovery in the second half of the year.

Despite the double-digit decline, the results narrowly outperformed forecasts from Cox Automotive, which had projected an 11.5% drop. The company now faces the challenge of stabilizing its electric portfolio, which saw a disproportionate pullback compared to its internal combustion and hybrid offerings, even as it works to clear the backlog of its primary profit generator.
