The 21-year-old investment vehicle has completed eight direct private placements so far in 2024. Central to this strategy is Prometheus, an AI startup where Bezos serves as both co-founder and co-CEO. The company recently secured a $12 billion Series B round, pushing its valuation to roughly $41 billion. Prometheus aims to develop an "artificial engineer" capable of accelerating the lifecycle of physical manufacturing, ranging from complex jet engines to pharmaceutical components.
Bezos contends that the massive capital requirements—Prometheus has raised over $18 billion to date—are necessary to fuel the compute power required for building foundational datasets. During a June 11 interview on CNBC’s "Squawk Box," he characterized the firm's mission as an attempt to accelerate the "invention loop," arguing that invention remains the primary driver of civilizational wealth. By pouring resources into these megarounds, Bezos Expeditions is effectively betting that hardware and physical production are the next frontiers for generative AI dominance.
